RIP Con ‘The DJ’ Raykos We’ve lost another legend of the Scarborough Football Club with the very sad news that resident DJ of the 90’s, Con Raykos lost his battle with stomach cancer. Con was 64 years old. My last of my regular call from Con was on April 4th when he shared the news that he had been diagnosed & had started his treatment. He wanted to keep it quiet & planned to push himself to get better so to be ready for Past Players Day on July 5. His brother John told me on Friday that Con unfortunately went downhill quickly & passed away on June 1st. He was known as Con The DJ & first came down to the Club after playing at Peter Smart’s wedding. Con then became a permanent fixture at both The Mill & The Sporties and would play almost every Saturday night through the 90’s & into the 2000s. He did many Beer Fests, Awards nights & was the DJ for many of our weddings, 21sts & even did my son Jack’s 14th which we held at Millington. Con also had the important job as the DJ for Raunchy Promotions which kept him very busy at venues from Naval Base to Yanchep. Con would arrive at the venue & start setting up his CD collection which was massive. In his white Ford panel van, he had speakers, turntables, amps, lights & anything else he might need. Everything was put in place in a meticulous manner & away the night went. Con knew what many players favourite song was & would play it at various stages of the night. Of course, the highlight for me was our shared love of Neil Diamond’s ‘Hot August Night’ double album which was played many, many times over the course of the night. He knew that Daisy Bryant liked Pulp & especially ‘Common People’, often accompanied by Daisy on the microphone. John Bengough loved REM, Losing My Religion, Sex Pistols for Roy Scheltens, Mick ‘Box’ Morris loved the build up to Hothouse Flowers ‘I can see clearly now the rain has gone’ & more often than not we would finish the night (well probably be tween 3 & 4 AM Sunday morning) with Gary Zlnay & myself belting out the Rolling Stones classic ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want.’ The list goes on and we can’t forget Rawhide & Hawaii Five O. Many nights finished with a kebab at Peter’s By The Sea so we piled in the van with all the gear & Con delivered us to the beach. One memorable story which Con continually reminded me, was the night that Gary Armstrong & I helped him pack up his DJ equipment & carried it down to his van from upstairs at The Sporties Club. I know that Army & I had had a few beers, but we both struggled to carry the speakers which were bloody heavy!! We looked at Con in a new light as he did this twice on most nights on his own. Con loved the Scarborough Football Club & we loved him and those nights are raised in so many of the memories when we all get together. He looked forward to coming down for the Granno Days, wearing his Club shirt & was always asking how the Club was going. Rest in Peace Con, your memory will live on with us all. Read more

Very sorry to lose a great friend particularly during our Geraldton days and primary school. I know Con you had your challenges but you always had courage and a nice friendly presence. I miss our coffee catch ups as well when you came to the eye clinic at Charlie’s Hospital .Rest in peace my friend. Victor Read more
