ALFRED GILES Alf always welcomed you with open arms into his house. You would always be greeted with your pet name and given a joke - typically a dad joke! He was a master at the dad jokes! I have fond memories of Alf making his bread on the weekend. I always thought he was so talented with all the different types of loaves he would make. I was so impressed with his spaghetti bolognese. It was a meal I never forgot. There was always a story to be told and he had many of them. Whether long or short! Alf loved a good old chat over a nice warm cuppa whether it was summer or winter and always trying to give you a sneaky drink of red wine.

I first met Alf in the Newnan, in the SMQ and we connected from then on. Alf, myself and other guys used to go bush to pass time whenever there were strikes, of which there were many. I learned a lot from Alf, where not to walk in bushland etc. Wittenoom were 2 stand outs. Reluctantly returning to the UK, I managed several trips back to Newman, Perth & Armadale. 11 Friar Road was like a second home to me and from there we did several trips, one to Albany for the best fish & chips! Serpentine Damn and York are also great memories. At this deeply sad time, I share these thoughts of Alf, Edna and the family. Real friends never part, whether ten miles away, or ten thousand miles apart. To Alf, Edna and all at 11 Friar Rd, those memories will last with me til my time comes To Alf, Goodnight, God bless, Safe journey home son. Cheers Alf , "Thanks Mate" Mal
