It’s hard to believe that more than 50 years ago, Josie, Richard and their children Ian, Lynda, Paul, Peter and Rodger moved into their house two doors away from ours in Newman., WA. With our family also having 5 children - it was a dream come true to have a family such as yours, with kids much the same ages only two doors away. Our families developed a strong friendship, and it was not long before homes and hearts were opened to each other. Josie you became a treasured friend of my mother’s and you were both a wonderful support for each other in times of trials and in celebrations of special moments for each family. You too were a warm and caring guide for many young people, friends of your family - me included. We, as a family, only had the pleasure of sharing that Newman location for around 15 months - however who knew at the time that our lives would be touched forever, no matter where we lived. Those bonds have spanned both generations and states of Australia - family members have kept in touch and supported one another in WA, Qld, NSW and Victoria too. Special moments have been deeply etched into:my heart and mind and will remain a treasure trove to be reviewed as time goes on and thoughts lead to you, Richard (Uncle Dick) and your cherished first born son, Ian. For me, you were particularly special - someone to share thoughts with, to share laughter, and concerns. I watched as you were there as guide and wonderful protector of your family - a family so precious to you, with you as their source of unending love and strength. You kept your family around you - valued them immensely - even when there were times that were challenging. Your warmth and love always shone through - no matter what. My digital watch has somehow of its own accord, brought your image to the screen repeatedly on a daily basis over the past two weeks, perhaps as a message to me - a reminder - sparking such fond memories of times together. You called me “My Lovely” and you will be remembered with fondness and love, always. Hendrika ( or as you called me - Rita) Deepest condolences to your children, grandchildren and great grandchildren - they have lost so much!

My first contact with Josie was at the age of 2 months when my Mum and I were evacuated to stay with her family while the bomb damage to our house was repaired. Since she lived the other side of London to us and transport links not being great I’m the 40s I didn’t see a lot of her until I was 10. At that time she was engaged to Richard and we went every weekend to stay at my Uncle Stan’s fish shop while myDad decorated her first marital home. Sometimes I stayed there for the week and looked forward to her returning from work so we could play records and chat. It was during one of our chats that we both said how lonely we both felt as only children and wished we had brothers or sisters. I am glad she had the big family that she wished for and her legacy will live on in them. Seeing her 12 years ago when she came to England was lovely. She was able to meet my daughter who now has memories of “My cousin in Australia”. Rest in peace lovely lady! We will all miss you.xx Chris Chris Gurton This is from cousin Hazel
